I bought this to share with my chemistry students. Just a little funny to start the day off, or introduce a new unit, or end a unit. Chemistry is already fun, but this just adds a little more, especially when we are stuck with lectures and book work between labs.
I've tried to learn chemistry on my own a few times and, although I haven't finished it, this book has an approach which allows me to feel like I actually have a clue what is going on. It isn't just the humor that does it -- it is the order in which the chemistry is taught. It doesn't start out with lots of dry equations, learning to write about things that have not yet been defined. Those books (and courses) could not keep my attention past page 2 or so. This book succeeds in doing what others have not -- it makes me want to learn chemistry! YAY!Now what I want is a workbook that would allow me to reinforce what I am learning in the same order as is presented in The Cartoon Guide to Chemistry ...
It may not be 100% accurate and it certainly isn't a high level read. But it is funny and does have a useful amount of information for the average person just wanting a little more knowledge of chemistry. My Biochemist husband has been enjoying the humor enormously. Will have to look for others like it.
Make no mistake, The Cartoon Guide To Chemistry gives you a full introductory (and then some) science textbook lesson in the danger, fun, and wonder of chemistry, but all without the aridly pedantic, tedious wording. There are a few moments where Gonick and Criddle get a little too cutesy with the humor, but the book is never overwhelmed by them. There are also those times when the math gets complex (as it has to), but fear not! Gonick also has wonderful books on Algebra, Calculus, and Physics!I've been reading Larry since the 1980s and his brilliant History of the Universe series. As a thoroughly enjoyable reference and reminder for adults, or a quick and helpful book for young people entering college, Larry Gonick is our Dr. Suess for Grown-ups.
I purchased this as a birthday present for my very nerdy boyfriend. He loves it! It's also been a great conversation piece as a lot of our friends will pick this and the similar books I purchased (Cartoon Guide to Physics and Cartoon Guide to Genetics) and start asking questions. We even had one friend say that if these subjects had been taught like this in school they probably would have understood the subject better. Very cool products and I definitely recommend!
This is a refreshing approach to teaching chemistry to people with limited science background. The authors start gently and gradually increase the technical aspects of chemistry with lots of illustrations and cartoons to make their points. It covers all the important aspects of chemistry and how it relates to our everyday experiences. I highly recommend it.
Good book. I read this over the summer before taking chem 305 to get familiar with Chemistry. It's fun to read and the cartoons are cute. It makes it feel more fun than educational which I enjoyed. I actually went into class feeling more prepared.
This book provides background information on chemistry in a manner that appears to catch my 12-year old son's interest. The information is quite substantial - what catches a kid's eyes is not colorful chemical reactions, but the ways complex concepts are presented in a lively way.I agree with other reviewers in that this book, although not a chemistry textbook itself, is a great supplement. I would imagine reading through this book before a first chemistry course could help a student by providing adequate background information. But again, the knowledge contained in the book is quite substantial. For kids, prepare to have a few iterations before getting the full benefit of the book.
