45 minutes is all it took for me to finally begin sketching my concepts. Yes, that's it. I opened the book during an hour train commute. It looked like a thick book but I was done in 45 minutes. My brain had absorbed and retained concepts and I sketched the take aways for me right away. I love the author laying out the simple patterns - e.g., 5 shapes are all you need to draw.On the ride back I finished the practice sketches. I feel super comfortable sketching out my product concepts. NOW, I know I'm a visual processor and for years have yearned to have a sketch person on-hand on-demand. Now I have him. it's me. If you KNOW you process information this way and just couldn't get started, this quick read can be the change for you!
I've read a few books on conveying ideas through drawing (Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam & Doodle Revolution by Sunni Brown) that were good and full of information, but neither really captured the gravity of using the ideas within to convey the ideas themselves.Throughout the entire book, Mike uses sketchnotes on every page to give the reader a pragmatic, well laid guide for how to take notes visually. He shares examples of other sketctnoters (giving them a platform to be seen and providing real-life examples of other sketchnoters), teaches you the basics of "formatting" your sketchnotes and the basics of drawing, which I've found incredibly helpful for making sure I'm capturing information as fully and clearly as I had hoped.I've gone through this book multiple times, and because of his ability to break the ideas down into digestible chunks and provide a rich wealth of information, I've started taking sketchnotes in meetings, at church and at conferences.
This is a good book not just for the content but also for the design, and both aspects can inspire you if you are fond of using pen and paper (or at least stylus and tablet) to capture what's happening around you. While the concept of a "Sketch Note" seems like something that should not really have a name, the book makes a great case for why visually oriented notes work well. The book contains many examples of notes using the style, and a number of Sketch Notes by practitioners of the craft, including such details as which pens and notebooks they prefer. The book ends with a number of exercises that encourage you to explore your ability to draw using a variety of techniques which make drawing less terrifying that it might be. From the message, to the examples, to the details such as covers with rounded corners (a form that is useful even for those older than "Board Book Age"), you may find this book inspires you to be creative and more attentive when you are taking notes.
I love the idea of sketchnotes. I expected to love this book, but upon reading it I found it lacking.*First, it was rather repetitive. Information in the different chapters overlapped a lot.*Second, I expected more help with creating my own sketchnotes. There is room for practicing different icons and whatnot in the back, but only a few pages. I expected more examples and places to practice typography.*Third, the book was hard to follow in places. It makes good sense to write this book as a big sketch note. However some of the examples from other contributors were all over the place and hard to follow. To me this negates the point of taking notes in this fashion. If you can't make sense of them later, what's the point?*I probably would have been better off buying the workbook first, but I just didn't know. And with the big price difference (the workbook is ~$35) I started here.In general I'd say skip this and just get the workbook (though I haven't actually bought or worked through that). This is a nice compilation of examples from the author in the shape of a book though.
First of all, this is a beautiful book, having a matte(?) finish, full of illustrations, using the very medium to 'deconstruct' itself. I even love the accent color (orange) used throughout the book. Loved the guest sketch noters. Don't get the Kindle edition. Appreciate the book in its native format as the author intended.The videos were okay. I felt they added little value, as the author merely clarified the concepts in his book. Given the passion the author has for sketch-noting, I kinda expected him to burst upon the screen like those guys from the infomercials. He had a business-like demeanor in front of the camera. If there was just one chapter worth watching, I would suggest watching the segment where Mike does a sketch note in real time, listening to Mr. Mueller. Oh- the online videos were not captioned. I would suggest that Peachpit require that future video submissions have subtitling and/or captioning.I primarily bought this book to give me ideas and techniques that i can share with my students. Then, they can make meaningful connections in studying their subject matter, i.e., Math, Reading, Science, in a visual way. It's also nice to undertake some sketch-noting during those professional development workshops. This book delivers for me, full of little tips I can immediately put to use.I feel that this book was somewhat superficial. It is indeed a quick read. I would have liked more coverage on Dual-Coding Theory, for instance. Little coverage was given to speaker patterns. What about having a 'listening triage', weeding out white noise and capturing relevant ideas? What if someone in the audience has an insightful idea? A heated debate? I'm not asking for a full blown treatise; just better coverage on listening and capturing ideas quickly and effectively.Another example; I rely on sign language for communications. In a meeting, I just can't look down and start doodling (or jotting) away. I have to watch, and retain as much as I can before there's a lull in the meeting, then I furiously scribble down my notes. At least, sketching images may be an acceptable substitute in writing notes during lulls as they're quicker to make and i can get back to the presentation at hand. In this book, Mike describes a 'brain cache' area, but doesn't really explore it. I would have liked to acquire better memorization techniques so I can hold ideas until I put them to paper.Mike Rohde is correct that sketch noting is an invaluable addition to a person's toolset in acquiring, retaining, and making meaningful connections between ideas. Not only Dual Coding Theory helps us understand why we retain and make meaningful connections between ideas in a visual manner, it is also kinesiology, the very act of sketching, that helps tie it all together. Thus, sketch notes have the most value to the person who did the notes; it truly helps him/her retain and understand what was presented at that workshop, meeting, etc. Even sketch noting while digesting a heavy treatise helps an individual better grasp and utilize the ideas being learned.However, I find an odd disconnect in treating sketch notes for wide distribution via social media. Sketch notes have little utility in communicating ideas to other people who were not present at the meeting, workshop, etc. I've looked at a couple of sketch notes in the wild and really couldn't understand them. I may grasp bits and pieces, but i get the feeling that I had to be there to understand these sketch notes fully. That said, sketch notes have some utility for communicating ideas with people who actually attended the meeting, workshop, etc., but didn't do any sketch-noting.I may be missing the point, but why would sketch noters share their sketch notes on social media, when they are ill-equipped vehicles in communicating ideas? Is it because they may have some intrinsic artistic merit? Just treat sketch notes as a tool that a person can utilize in capturing and synthesizing ideas in a visual form, and not for any intrinsic artistic value they may have. Overall, a good book.

Lewis, founding director of the McKinsey Global Institute and former partner at McKinsey & Company, offers a detailed look at the local economies in several parts of the world including the U.S., Japan, India and Brazil. Based on the Institute's 12-year survey and analysis, Lewis concludes that the great economic disparity between rich and poor countries will ultimately have a negative impact on all nations. Lewis and his team examined individual industries within a country to evaluate the productivity per employee. The specific country-by-country distillations are easily understood, regardless of one's familiarity with economic theory, and readers will not be surprised by Lewis's discussion of the thriving Japanese economy, successful largely because of its domination of the automobile market. The Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir draws on contemporary sources to tell the story of Henry VIII’s six wives, Catherine of Aragon (mother of Mary, annulled), Anne Boleyn (mother of Elizabeth, executed), Jane Seymour (mother of Edward VI, died due to childbirth), Anne of Cleves (annulled), Catherine Howard (executed), and Catherine Parr (marriage ended when he died). The book is very long and very in-depth, but the stories are told in a way that draws the reader in and holds attention. Most interesting is that although Henry VIII was adamant he have multiple male heirs and disapproved of women ruling, his one legitimate son never ruled in his own right since he died at just 15, but his daughters are still remembered today, one for how bloody her reign was and the other for the great era she presided over. I highly recommend this book to anyone with any interest in medieval England or Henry VIII.
Can one every OD on books about the Tudors? Well, I thought the answer was "no," but after reading Alison Weir's book, I think I can put the Tudors on hold for a while. It's an excellent book, and certainly added to my knowledge of the period. But perhaps it gave me more information than I was able to absorb. A friend once told me that non-fiction writers need to appeal either to academics or to the general populace, but not both. In many cases I think that's true, but "The Six Wives..." is certainly accessible to the general reader while at the same time it provides the documentation, examples, and supporting information suitable for an academic treatise. Even though my grad school days have long since expired, I still have the tendency to plod through some books as a means of understanding every nuance, memorizing every fact, and confronting every argument. But I'm getting better, and in this case found myself, about half way through, simply trying to get a general sense of a paragraph or issue, then moving on.In recent times, I've read Peter Ackroyd's "The Tudors," and on the fiction side all the C.J. Sansom mysteries featuring Matthew Shardlake, covering England in the 1530s and 1540s; all rated 4 or more stars and are highly recommended. I'll even confess to watching "The Tudors" on TV. All these presentations contribute to a better understanding of what went on during that period - and even though facts were skewed in the TV series, it was interesting to see the elaborate costumes and be exposed to the ubiquitous intrigues.Alison Weir does a great job with all six wives. She certainly expanded my understanding of those women. For example, I hadn't before realized what a dreary, painful life Katherine of Argon lived - for the most part. Or how manipulative Anne Boleyn was. Another interesting aspect was how enamored Henry became of each of his wives (especially before he married them), and how quickly he usually lost interest in them - except his great passion for Jane Seymour. At the same time, I came to appreciate more fully how concerned Henry was about continuing the Tudor line, especially with a male, and how he felt the Tudors were on shaky ground in holding on to the throne.Although the upper crust during the Tudor era wore beautiful clothes, were catered to by numerous servants, and lived off the fat (such as it was) of the land, I would not have enjoyed living during that time. Amenities were sparse, but the main drawback was living in constant fear of falling out of favor, being carted off to the Tower, and horribly executed. Not the most relaxing way to live one's life.
Confession: I only made it about 20% of the way into this tome. It does provide some fascinating historical nuggets about the time period and the historical figures involved with the Tudor court, but unfortunately they're mired in pages upon pages of minutiae and non-linear narration.I don't feel like I need to know the details of every outfit, piece of jewelry and hairstyle worn at the various state events, for example, and the way the narrator jumps back and forth through time forced me to keep flipping back through the book to try and maintain some kind of cohesive timeline of events and people in my own mind. The book does provide its own timeline chart of dates with significant events, but in the Kindle book it's too tiny to easily read and even if it were larger, I don't like having to constantly flip back and forth in a book in order to follow the thread.At the point where this became more like homework than pleasure reading, I gave up.
This is a fascinating look at life back in the days of Henry VIII and the women who shared his throne. It is an in depth look at the customs and beliefs of the men and women of that era. I had no clue how difficult life was for women and children in those days. It examined in careful detail the reality of the women and to a degree the children that were in the court of Henry VIII. I appreciated the authors careful and in depth research on this fascinating topic. It was a great read and a believable historical novel. The author was careful to note when historical fact was either missing or came from a suspect source. It wasn't just another history book. It was lovely, flowed smoothly and was very informative. It had life to it and made you feel as though you were there. I am looking forward to reading her book about the children Henry VIII sired. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the history of the time and the people in Henry VIII's life.

I have enjoyed Alison Weir so much in the past for both her scholarship and clarity that she brings to her writing. Henry VIII is a man who has been characterized from the benign ruler to tyrant. This specific book deals with challenges and human errors that any of us could make. Yet, for many it is difficult to understand such situations in their proper historical context. To view the 16th century through the eyes of the 21st century denies what time and civilization has taught us. I commend this book to those who want a deeper understanding of religious changes in England during the 16th century. Reformation did not occur under Henry though it may have had its inception there. He was a catholic in any understanding of that word but what we see under Henry VIII is a political struggle. The true transformation of the Church of England will happen with the Elizabethan Settlement not covered in this book. I loved the Six Wives and it is well worth a serious read.

Berrey shows how civil rights activism, African Americans' refusal to follow the Jim Crow script, and national perceptions of southern race relations led Mississippi segregationists to change tactics. No longer able to rely on the earlier routines, whites turned instead to less visible but equally insidious practices of violence, surveillance, and policing, rooted in a racially coded language of law and order. Reflecting broader national transformations, these practices laid the groundwork for a new era marked by black criminalization, mass incarceration, and a growing police presence in everyday life.
