Vehement about the "demeaning forces" of bell-curve ratings, Wallace describes her successes in implementing a non-traditional system of instruction: it emphasized teaching children according to their individual abilities and pleased both students and their teachers, but it threatened the power of a politically cautious school board. The authors explain how the bell-curve system encourages, even necessitates, an artificial and destructive median (of mediocrity) and compels teachers to judge children on what they do not know. However, this book is not a castigation of educators or the system; it is a celebration of how Wallace, as superintendent of the most troubled school district in North Carolina, and others like her have taken steps to reject bell-curve assumptions in favor of individualized instruction in which students progress at their own pace within achievement groups, rather than age-level-defined classrooms. This is not a totally upbeat story as Wallace left the superintendency over a political dispute. I've been doing quite a bit of reading lately on intrinsic motivation, perseverance, drive and grit. When Shark Tank's Daymond John published "Rise and Grind" earlier this year and then joined Chelsea Krost for a TwitterChat, I knew it was a must read.Authentic insightful and inspiring, Daymond weaves the journey of his rags to riches tale along a path of themes. He then introduces others who provide greater depth and perspectives of those themes by sharing their rise & grind motivations. Hard not to be energized by the process of studying others drive.Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend
WORD UP!! This—is a MUST READ. Daymond John himself has an extremely inspiring nothing to everything story, but “Rise and Grind†takes us into the lives and minds of many people whose journey to success is so important to read for anyone seeking hope, and motivation.
Daymond John certainly features some interesting stories in this book but his examples are so high-performing and come from such challenging backgrounds that the messages and intended take-aways are a little out of reach. In fact, Mr. John himself writes extensively about how hard he worked—a level of intensity and dedication that I'm quite frankly unable to match. Not suitable for the middle 80 percent of individuals who are interested in ways to outperform. Suitable for those who are simply looking for inspiration (though be wary of simply feeling worse).
This is a 5star book for being able to implant a millionaire billionaire hustle inside of the everyday hustler/worker. This book is for people who are trying to make it to a better position in life and for people who don't want to become stagnant or take steps back. Every story inside the book gave a different meaning to Rise and Grind but it all stood true to the remaining tittle of the book Outperform Outwork and Outhustle the competition. This book is for everybody. It's for people who take life for granted and for people who don't as a reminder of why working hard is as necessary as living good.
