I had written the book two years earlier, but rejection letters from publishers fluttered on my desk with great regularity: “Sorry, not usable for our program ... ,” “We are very sorry ... ,” “We don’t want to go this way ... ,” “We recommend a more esoteric publisher....”In later years I was often asked how this publishing miracle happened, to finally place this controversial work with a renowned textbook house. Today I can finally confess: with outside help and a little discretion.I met Dr. Thomas von Randow, then the science editor of the weekly Die Zeit, in the summer of 1967. He leafed through the neatly typed manuscript, examined some of the peculiar pictures, and decided, “This is not for us. You have to publish it as a book.”“And how does one find a publisher?”Dr. von Randow puffed on his pipe, looked me straight in the eyes: “I do know a publisher. I could just give him a noncommittal call, if you wish.”He picked up the telephone and asked to be connected with Dr. Erwin Barth von Wehrenalp, the chief of Econ Publishing. The blood rushed to my head. After all, I knew what Dr. von Randow could not know: My manuscript had already been turned down by Econ. Naturally, the ensuing conversation stuck in my gray brain cells.

I actually read this book for the thidr time during August 2016 and somehow neglected to write a review. Before I process with my review I must warn readers that I believe that it is probable that Earth was visited by Extraterrestrials who interacted and influenced humanity in the ancient past! I also believe these visits continue even today. Now for my review."Chariot of the Gods" was written neatly 50 years ago and was the first book I read to discuss the possibility of visits to Earth by extraterrestrials. I picked up the book in an Airport Bookstore just prior to my flight to Vietnam in January of 1969. I finished the book before we arrived in country and was hooked! Von Daniekan's writing style, observations, and analysis of the evidence used by mainstream science anchor theology to explain the presence of artifacts, writings and other materials, coupled with his alternative explanations and proofs were not only plausible, but also down right convincing. His writing style is conversational and non threatening. He provides the facts and asks thw reader to draw their own conclusions. To say this book was controversial in the late 1960s and early 1970s is an understatement! The amazing thing is that many of his early conclusions have gained wide acceptance with millions of people. Ancient Astronaut Theory is, in my opinion, no longer fringe science and we have Erich to thank for it!! I will leave it to you the reader to uncover the details of his findings and, if you like read his other 30 or so books on this topic to reach your own conclusions. I recommend this book to readers with an open mind and for those of you, such as myself, who are based on the evidence, not sure that main stream science and theology has got it right. I think those of you who take the time to read Von Daniekan will enjoy his work!

I grew up deeply religions even attending a very conservative religious college. I have no doubt there is a God but I believe that we have been misled by the Bible, archaeologist, and historians regarding ancient issues such as flying dragons, flying chariots, the pyramids, and other explainable events. There is too much evidence from other historical documents, including the Bible, Quoran, Jewish texts, Sumerian text, Book of Enoch, etc, that when collectively combined, show there's a much bigger picture of history. This book does a great job in taking the FACTS from all these sources to explain various phenomena from the past. Its a great read and I high recommend it...if you can read it with an open mind. At one point mankind believe the world was flat and the Sun rotated around the Earth. Similarly this book will give you a whole new perspective on the Chariots of the Gods.

This is the book that first brought the ancient alien theory to mainstream culture. It should be the first read for all ancient alien theorists. If you think the ancient alien theory is "out of this world" ridiculous, I dare you to read this book. Von Daniken doesn't just make suppositions off his own beliefs, he offers serious archaeological evidence to support his theories. If you haven't a clue what an ancient alien is, if you are an out of the box thinker, or you love archaeology &/or history, this is also a must read for you. I first read this book when I was in grade school & I still read it with the same sense of wonder.

Erich von Daniken had the insight and courage to research a topic which would be ridiculed by most people. He begs us to ask why and how so many ancient structures and artifacts exist around the world that is impossible to build even today. All the ancient myths and religions talk about flying gods. Where they ancient visitors or explorers from a distant planet or galaxy?

The theories von Daniken presents in this book are very interesting.I watched the documentary series "Codes and Conspiracy" episode "Ancient astrounats" and that got me to buy this book. The theories in the book are indeed unsual and they do make a lot sense. The authors interpretations of ancient ruins, images and legends from all over the world makes sense, and I can see that there is a possibility that things did occur in the way the author portrays in this book. But, there is a lot "what if" questions in this book.If von Daniken could back up his intriguing theories with hard, concrete evidence, we would have to rewrite our history. The theories are both interesting and intriguing, but, "where is the evidence"?

I have heard about this book for years, but until now never really thought about reading it until I watched H2's, "Ancient Aliens" series. There are different theories of our existence and learning about them is interesting. Having been raised Catholic, it can be difficult to think out of the box, but how else can we learn, explore, and seek new questions and answers. This book, and others like it, open our minds to other possibilities of our creation and our history. I understand why in 1967, this book created a stir. However, today, the questions that the book asks, do not seem so far-fetched. Even the Catholic church reaches out to the heavens (with their large telescope) to see if there are answers and knowledge to gain about what has happened in the past, the present, and the future. Sometimes, I had to read things a couple times to make sure I understood them correctly, but all-in-all it was interesting and entertaining and finished in 3 days. I will purchase other books by Erich von Daniken as long as the price is right.

There are people on here wbom discredit Von Däniken to be too "Matter of Fact" With his theories. People...They are....THEORIES! Albert Einstein published his books on Relativity PRIOR to those theories being proved physically, and some Mathematically. Great thinkers question our history and propose theories. I thought Von Däniken did a GREAT Job of keeping the reader well entertained & causing the reader to question some of the "accepted" theories which have found their way into History Books. Great Book. Can't wait 'till the next one. Danka!

Susan Glaspell and Jig Cram Cook were part of the Bohemian center of the progressive era or early modernist era in America. Good friends with Floyd Dell, Hutchins Hapgood, Max Eastman, Eugene O'Neill, John Reed, and more, all the leading players in that era which was a lyrical combination of both radical and innocence in pre-WWI America. In the summers they would all converge in Provincetown. Largely at Jig Cook's leadership, this group of artists and journalists began to write and perform their own plays, founding the Provincetown Players 1915, an influential Little Theatre group. This is Glaspell's biography of her husband Jig Cram Cook, a man who couldn't match his early intellectual promise, a big ego who grasped onto the Provincetown Players as his last chance to achieve something - or so it seemed. I have to admit my image was turned around in this moving biography. Cook was a classic artistic personality, seeped in tragedy but in his case lacking an artistic talent equal to the depth of his emotions and intelligence. And then the Provincetown Players emerged and seemed to provide him with the forum to fit his imagined destiny. In the 1920s and 30s there were a few of the avant garde who ended up dying in some strange land, for some strange reason, before their time. Cook joins that group, with John Reed the only American buried in the Kremlin with full honors and Big Bill Haywood banished from America to Russia had the sad irony of dying there disillusioned with the system (and also buried at the Kremlin) and Jig Cram Cook joins that list, moving to Greece, his utopia (he was a classics scholar and so altho he's fluent in Greek, it wasn't the modern form), after loosing O'Neill to Broadway and betrayed by the Provincetown Players, to live life not as an ex-pat but in the hills in tents and sheds amongst the shepherds, heartbroken, betrayed and forgotten ("Why, with so much beautiful power, was I nothing?" he writes his wife) and dying early after only a few years. From the modest background of a well-off family in Davenport Iowa to the Bohemia of early New York Greenwich Village to his sad and unexpected death in the hills of Greece amongst the peasants at age 51, showing the strange twists one life can take. In the end, I think he would be very pleased to know the vast scholarship focused on him, that in this unexpected way, he did achieve the place in history he so longed for.

(Applause Books). In February 1999, Steven Sater conceived the radical notion of creating a rock musical from Frank Wedekind's notorious Symbolist drama, Fruhlings Erwachen , and he enlisted his friend and writing partner Duncan Sheik in the enterprise. That night, Sater came home and began writing the first lyric of Spring Awakening : "Mama Who Bore Me" a lyric which still stands, verbatim, just as he first wrote it. Ten years later, in the wake of the enormous international success of this groundbreaking, multiaward-winning show, its original director, Michael Mayer, urged Sater to write notes explicating its famously evocative, poetic lyrics. In rich detail, Sater's notes address the literary sources and allusions of each lyric. He also writes feelingly of what prompted the songs over the course of the show's eight years of development. In so doing, Sater expands on his partnership with Sheik and his experiences with original cast members, Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, now also known from Glee . These notes will prove invaluable for fans of the show, for all those interested in theater, and most especially for all the young performers who will play the roles and sing these songs.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7–10—Jacob Fielding shouldn't have survived the car accident that killed his foster father, but he did. A week later, he writes "You are indestructible"—Mr. Fielding's last words to him—on the wrist cast of Ophelia, a new girl at school, and soon after, she comes through a devastating skateboard crash without a scratch. With his final words, Mr. Fielding had gifted Jacob the power to keep death at bay, and the boy, along with Oh and his friend Milo, begins to play with life and death. Jacob can pass his power to others, and he does: first to Oh, and then to anyone the three can find who is in a situation likely to be fatal. What they don't know, and only discover when Oh's behavior becomes violently erratic, is that death cannot be stopped entirely. For every life they save, someone else must die. This page-turner is a natural choice for reluctant readers and fans of both adventure stories and supernatural thrillers. While Jacob and his friends seek out and shun death, they also explore the bounds of friendship and first romance. The story behind Jacob's power, an intriguing tale involving Harry Houdini, may encourage readers to delve further into the magician's history. Despite a few underdeveloped plot points, this novel will engage many readers.—Karen E. Brooks-Reese, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA

From Booklist
The author of the Land of Elyon series crafts a creepy fantasy-mystery for older readers. Grieving over the sudden death of his well-liked foster parent (and harboring a guilty secret about that), Jacob discovers that his inheritance includes the power of invulnerability. Bemused, he shares his imperviousness to pain or physical damage with his impulsive best friend, Milo, and a beautiful, intense new classmate named Ophelia—and discovers that he can temporarily pass the ability on to them. He quickly comes to regret the sharing, as Ophelia engages in an increasingly dangerous round of tests, stunts, and life-saving rescues. Ominously, the power also begins to feel darker and wilder as it fends off death after death. Carman cranks the suspense up smoothly on the way to a horrifying revelation, a (literally) shocking climax, and a not entirely happy, but at least not tragic, ending. A provocative take on the theme that every superpower comes with a price. Grades 7-10. --John Peters

About the Author

The Bhagavad Gita: A New TranslationBy George Thompson

A fresh, new prose translation of the classic Indian poem, ideally focused for students and teachers and for yoga teacher training

The Bhagavad Gita, a small section of the massive Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata, is one of the central texts of Indian culture and philosophy, and one of the great works of world literature. It has been translated into English many times since 1785, and has had a profound influence in America, beginning with the transcendentalists and continuing today. It is taught in introductory world literature, religion, and Eastern religion courses, and is often prescribed in yoga teacher training courses because it explains the core principles of Vedic philosophy, which are central to yoga practice.

Some of the currently available translations are in verse and, while well crafted, often do not accurately reflect the forms, sounds, and rhythms of the original. Older scholarly translations convey little feel for language. George Thompson's intention is to be as accurate and engaging as possible, and to create a translation that has scholarly bona fides, literary sensibility, and greater accuracy than previous translations. He emphasizes the social, historical, literary, and philosophical contexts surrounding the text. His introduction explains the development of Hindu thought and where the philosophy of the "Gita" fits historically, along with a history of the text and its place in Indian literature and philosophy and history..

Review

“This new translation of the Bhagavad Gita comes as close to the liveliness, topicality, and flow of the original as any I have seen. Professor George Thomson has more than twenty years of experience teaching it to students. His Introduction explains the Yoga of the Gita. It is learned without being heavy. Notes and bibliography are helpful and succinct. I recommend this translation without reservation to scholars and teachers of Sanskrit and to beginning students of Indian culture. It remains the most popular book of one of the largest and most creative civilizations of the contemporary world.” ―Frits Staal, Professor Emeritus, University of California at Berkeley

“The Bhagavad Gita is and has always been a must read for anyone interested in India, ancient or modern. No wonder it has been translated and re-translated into so many languages, English being perhaps the most frequently used medium. Dr. Thompson's translation is truly novel, because not only does it render the poem's Sanskrit quite differently, but also offers groundbreaking interpretations of many stanzas, even well-known ones. It retains poetic qualities of the original and is a genuine pleasure to read. Moreover, it fully meets expectations that even the most demanding readers of our time have come to count on in an academic translation: it is precise and thoroughly researched. The translation and commentary testify to the author's ample erudition. Compelling comments will no doubt be of great service to inquisitive minds who would want to understand the author's approach to translating some of the most difficult Sanskrit passages that are rendered masterfully. I wholeheartedly recommend this translation to all readers.” ―Boris Oguibenine, Professor, Université Marc Bloch de Strasbourg

“George Thompson brings his fine-tuned sense of poetic language and his deep knowledge of the Indian, especially Vedic, religious tradition to this fresh and vigorous new translation of this foundational text.” ―Stephanie W. Jamison, Professor of Asian Languages and Cultures, UCLA

“With this elegant, new rendering of The Bhagavad Gita, George Thompson has achieved the seemingly impossible: his translation is accurate, yet readable; written in crisp, straightforward prose, but filled with poetic brilliance; accompanied by a learned introduction and valuable commentary, both of which are informed by profound Indological scholarship that illuminates rather than intimidates. In short, this is a gem that will be appreciated by anyone who wishes to familiarize himself or herself with one of the world's greatest religious and philosophical classics. It will be of particular interest to those who are studying or practicing Yoga, but will also be warmly welcomed by anyone who wishes to learn more about traditional Indian culture and thought.” ―Victor H. Mair, Professor of Chinese Language and Literature Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, University of Pennsylvania

“The Bhagavad Gita has been used in numerous ways from Gandhi to proponents of nuclear war. The central issue is one of belief strong enough to override any other consideration, including one's own death. George Thompson's translation is clear and luminous; it opens a space of engagement that other translations often miss. I was able to read and think about the Gita as a contemporary text, one arguing in relation to our concerns as well as those of ancient Hinduism. Thompson's introduction brings out both the background of the Gita and its current relevance. His translation presents the philosophical/ethical issues that underly it and brings the Gita to life and to relevance both as historic document and contemporary discourse. This version seems lucid and true and wonderful; everyone should read it.” ―Alan Sondheim, West Virginia University, Center for Literary Computing

“George Thompson's new translation of The Bhagavad Gita is a gift to teachers, students and seekers. The prose is lucid, lively and admirably literal. The key metaphors are skillfully rendered, the core teachings precisely delineated; most important, the philosophical and spiritual radiance of the original shines through.” ―Carol Zaleski, Professor of World Religions, Smith College

From the Head Comix I bought at age 12 to Weirdo, I grew up on Crumb and think he is a great artist and observer. I agree with Hughes' assessment that he is a modern-day Hieronymous Bosch. I bought this thinking that it would bring together a huge array of some of my favorites, which were in disparate underground mags that I have lost over the years.Unfortunately, the assortment of stories here is almost entirely derivative, spinoffs from the great stuff that are cheap commercial retreads. Yes, Crumb does recycle many of his jokes (a necessity, I suppose, given the need to churn it out) and a lot of it is second rate at best. For example, his My Troubles with Women (the Zap original) is one of the funniest things I have ever read, a masterpiece of misogyny and satire that is second to none. In this volume, you get My Troubles with Women part 2, which simply cannot match the original. That is the case for most of the stories, which are just weirder and more exaggerated and grotesque than the better ones he did earlier, elsewhere. Then, there are many off-the-cuff sketches as filler, which also add very little.I cannot recommend this collection, except to the hardest core of Crumb devotees.

Gorgeous, accessibly-priced collection of Mr. Crumb's devotion to "Big, Fahn Legs" and Jutting Posteriors... of course, not all-inclusive (we'd need a several thousand page multi-volume collection) of the vast range of Crumb's lusts, depravities, and fetishistic obsessions - but this is a nicely packaged over-view of the man's psychosexual compulsions, committed to paper in comic-strip and single page drawings. Thanks to Taschen and Ms. Dian Hanson for bringing this fun-filled volume to the masses.

Nice collection of Robert Crumb comics, much of it in color. The paper is of the absorbent variety, which works best for reproducing comic art colored in flat colors. I wouldn't have included the 40 some pages of the Championship Wrestling, which isn't as sexual as one would wish, but overall, a good selection of his work, old and new.

Great design, choice of paper stock, and coloring of the strips, which originally appeared in black-and-white.A bargain of a price too. Taschen--and R. Crumb--strike again. A masterful volume of comic art.

I was not buying the $500 plus edition, thank goodness they made a mere mortals edition. Well drawn stories, of course Crumb did so much sex stuff some of your favorites might be missing, but well worth it nonetheless.

Taschen and Robert Crumb together? Unbelievable, and that's exactly what this volume is, rich in color and otherwise unavailable stories. This is a massive compendium of one of the greatest artists of the last half a century. With a pulled, surprise print enclosed in it's own bound sleeve, this is truly a collector's item, but don't save for resale, open and enjoy. His work delves into not only his own obsessions and insecurities, but is one of the most insightful individuals rendering on paper the human condition. More often than not, it is right on cue and right on track. Slipcassed, signed, numbered and set in it's own private corrugated packaging, this is one volume absolutely not to be missed. But, you better hurry, only 1,000 copies were set for sale along with 200 artist's proofs set aside, so it won't be available long. The print enclosed, original art quality! Not a detail was missed. Thanks Taschen.

While most people regard R. Crumb as a rather strange, kinky and sexually 'hung-up' eccentric graphic artist of the 60s/70s era, he is in fact both a considerably gifted artist AND reflectively intelligent human being. While many leftist liberal progressives today regard Crumb as an archetypal 'sexist pig', in actuality R. Crumb lays the biological facts of gender realities on the line in his graphic works, with no bones (pun intended) about it! The hard, cold truth of life is that male human beings are biologically programmed to lust after female human beings and what many regard as 'sexual perversions' are just different means of expressing this basic truth of existence. Of course those who hew strongly to various conservative religious codes have difficulty accepting their own 'animal sexuality', but for those who are not so constrained, just about anything is permissible in the sexual arena (short of cruelly & deliberately causing pain in others and engaging in clearly execrable practices such as pederasty). Crumb recognises this intellectual argument and give free vent to his own quite interesting (& natural) sexual hangups. Most entertaining and a very worthy addition to any collection of R. Crumb works! Published (and edited) in Germany and somewhat more difficult to find than other books dealing with this archetypal graphic artist.

Fantastic collection of sexually oriented Robert Crumb art. Beautiful women and dirty old Robert! HeeHee! Fun perverted and hilarious. Not for prudes by any means.
