45 minutes is all it took for me to finally begin sketching my concepts. Yes, that's it. I opened the book during an hour train commute. It looked like a thick book but I was done in 45 minutes. My brain had absorbed and retained concepts and I sketched the take aways for me right away. I love the author laying out the simple patterns - e.g., 5 shapes are all you need to draw.On the ride back I finished the practice sketches. I feel super comfortable sketching out my product concepts. NOW, I know I'm a visual processor and for years have yearned to have a sketch person on-hand on-demand. Now I have him. it's me. If you KNOW you process information this way and just couldn't get started, this quick read can be the change for you!
I've read a few books on conveying ideas through drawing (Back of the Napkin by Dan Roam & Doodle Revolution by Sunni Brown) that were good and full of information, but neither really captured the gravity of using the ideas within to convey the ideas themselves.Throughout the entire book, Mike uses sketchnotes on every page to give the reader a pragmatic, well laid guide for how to take notes visually. He shares examples of other sketctnoters (giving them a platform to be seen and providing real-life examples of other sketchnoters), teaches you the basics of "formatting" your sketchnotes and the basics of drawing, which I've found incredibly helpful for making sure I'm capturing information as fully and clearly as I had hoped.I've gone through this book multiple times, and because of his ability to break the ideas down into digestible chunks and provide a rich wealth of information, I've started taking sketchnotes in meetings, at church and at conferences.
This is a good book not just for the content but also for the design, and both aspects can inspire you if you are fond of using pen and paper (or at least stylus and tablet) to capture what's happening around you. While the concept of a "Sketch Note" seems like something that should not really have a name, the book makes a great case for why visually oriented notes work well. The book contains many examples of notes using the style, and a number of Sketch Notes by practitioners of the craft, including such details as which pens and notebooks they prefer. The book ends with a number of exercises that encourage you to explore your ability to draw using a variety of techniques which make drawing less terrifying that it might be. From the message, to the examples, to the details such as covers with rounded corners (a form that is useful even for those older than "Board Book Age"), you may find this book inspires you to be creative and more attentive when you are taking notes.
I love the idea of sketchnotes. I expected to love this book, but upon reading it I found it lacking.*First, it was rather repetitive. Information in the different chapters overlapped a lot.*Second, I expected more help with creating my own sketchnotes. There is room for practicing different icons and whatnot in the back, but only a few pages. I expected more examples and places to practice typography.*Third, the book was hard to follow in places. It makes good sense to write this book as a big sketch note. However some of the examples from other contributors were all over the place and hard to follow. To me this negates the point of taking notes in this fashion. If you can't make sense of them later, what's the point?*I probably would have been better off buying the workbook first, but I just didn't know. And with the big price difference (the workbook is ~$35) I started here.In general I'd say skip this and just get the workbook (though I haven't actually bought or worked through that). This is a nice compilation of examples from the author in the shape of a book though.
First of all, this is a beautiful book, having a matte(?) finish, full of illustrations, using the very medium to 'deconstruct' itself. I even love the accent color (orange) used throughout the book. Loved the guest sketch noters. Don't get the Kindle edition. Appreciate the book in its native format as the author intended. The videos were okay. I felt they added little value, as the author merely clarified the concepts in his book. Given the passion the author has for sketch-noting, I kinda expected him to burst upon the screen like those guys from the infomercials. He had a business-like demeanor in front of the camera. If there was just one chapter worth watching, I would suggest watching the segment where Mike does a sketch note in real time, listening to Mr. Mueller. Oh- the online videos were not captioned. I would suggest that Peachpit require that future video submissions have subtitling and/or captioning.I primarily bought this book to give me ideas and techniques that i can share with my students. Then, they can make meaningful connections in studying their subject matter, i.e., Math, Reading, Science, in a visual way. It's also nice to undertake some sketch-noting during those professional development workshops. This book delivers for me, full of little tips I can immediately put to use.I feel that this book was somewhat superficial. It is indeed a quick read. I would have liked more coverage on Dual-Coding Theory, for instance. Little coverage was given to speaker patterns. What about having a 'listening triage', weeding out white noise and capturing relevant ideas? What if someone in the audience has an insightful idea? A heated debate? I'm not asking for a full blown treatise; just better coverage on listening and capturing ideas quickly and effectively.Another example; I rely on sign language for communications. In a meeting, I just can't look down and start doodling (or jotting) away. I have to watch, and retain as much as I can before there's a lull in the meeting, then I furiously scribble down my notes. At least, sketching images may be an acceptable substitute in writing notes during lulls as they're quicker to make and i can get back to the presentation at hand. In this book, Mike describes a 'brain cache' area, but doesn't really explore it. I would have liked to acquire better memorization techniques so I can hold ideas until I put them to paper.Mike Rohde is correct that sketch noting is an invaluable addition to a person's toolset in acquiring, retaining, and making meaningful connections between ideas. Not only Dual Coding Theory helps us understand why we retain and make meaningful connections between ideas in a visual manner, it is also kinesiology, the very act of sketching, that helps tie it all together. Thus, sketch notes have the most value to the person who did the notes; it truly helps him/her retain and understand what was presented at that workshop, meeting, etc. Even sketch noting while digesting a heavy treatise helps an individual better grasp and utilize the ideas being learned. However, I find an odd disconnect in treating sketch notes for wide distribution via social media. Sketch notes have little utility in communicating ideas to other people who were not present at the meeting, workshop, etc. I've looked at a couple of sketch notes in the wild and really couldn't understand them. I may grasp bits and pieces, but i get the feeling that I had to be there to understand these sketch notes fully. That said, sketch notes have some utility for communicating ideas with people who actually attended the meeting, workshop, etc., but didn't do any sketch-noting.I may be missing the point, but why would sketch noters share their sketch notes on social media, when they are ill-equipped vehicles in communicating ideas? Is it because they may have some intrinsic artistic merit? Just treat sketch notes as a tool that a person can utilize in capturing and synthesizing ideas in a visual form, and not for any intrinsic artistic value they may have. Overall, a good book.

The disparity between rich and poor countries is the most serious, intractable problem facing the world today. The chronic poverty of many nations affects more than the citizens and economies of those nations; it threatens global stability as the pressures of immigration become unsustainable and rogue nations seek power and influence through extreme political and terrorist acts. To address this tenacious poverty, a vast array of international institutions has pumped billions of dollars into these nations in recent decades, yet despite this infusion of capital and attention, roughly five billion of the world's six billion people continue to live in poor countries. What isn't working? And how can we fix it?
The Power of Productivity provides powerful and controversial answers to these questions. William W. Lewis, the director emeritus of the McKinsey Global Institute, here draws on extensive microeconomic studies of thirteen nations over twelve years—conducted by the Institute itself—to counter virtually all prevailing wisdom about how best to ameliorate economic disparity. Lewis's research, which included studying everything from state-of-the-art auto makers to black-market street vendors and mom-and-pop stores, conclusively demonstrates that, contrary to popular belief, providing more capital to poor nations is not the best way to help them. Nor is improving levels of education, exchange-rate flexibility, or government solvency enough. Rather, the key to improving economic conditions in poor countries, argues Lewis, is increasing productivity through intense, fair competition and protecting consumer rights.
As The Power of Productivity explains, this sweeping solution affects the economies of poor nations at all levels—from the viability of major industries to how the average consumer thinks about his or her purchases. Policies must be enacted in developing nations that reflect a consumer rather than a producer mindset and an attendant sense of consumer rights. Only one force, Lewis claims, can stand up to producer special privileges—consumer interests.
The Institute's unprecedented research method and Lewis's years of experience with economic policy combine to make The Power of Productivity the most authoritative and compelling view of the global economy today, one that will inform political and economic debate throughout the world for years to come.

From Publishers Weekly
Lewis, founding director of the McKinsey Global Institute and former partner at McKinsey & Company, offers a detailed look at the local economies in several parts of the world including the U.S., Japan, India and Brazil. Based on the Institute's 12-year survey and analysis, Lewis concludes that the great economic disparity between rich and poor countries will ultimately have a negative impact on all nations. Lewis and his team examined individual industries within a country to evaluate the productivity per employee. The specific country-by-country distillations are easily understood, regardless of one's familiarity with economic theory, and readers will not be surprised by Lewis's discussion of the thriving Japanese economy, successful largely because of its domination of the automobile market. However, the more detailed analysis of Japanese business, which is limited by government policy including restrictive land regulations that have kept larger retailers like Wal-Mart away, is quite informative. The author's examination of American domestic productivity is also clear and accessible: in the 1990s, growth occurred in only six sectors, including four technological areas—security brokers, microprocessors, computer assembly and mobile telephone services. As evidenced by the tech bubble, slowed growth in these fields has hurt the economy. Lewis concludes by explaining how various factors, including education, government controls and cooperation among countries, will play a part in future international economic stability. This is an insightful treatment of a complex issue that deserves a wide readership.

Review
“The question Lewis set out to answer was why poor countries are poor and rich ones rich. It had been asked before, and answered by looking at the big differences between nations: history and culture, capital markets, labor markets, etc. Lewis’ approach was to look at specific businesses. He made a point not to focus on export industries, like cars in Japan and software in India. Each is only a sliver of that country’s employment. . . . This is a valuable book. . . . Lewis confirms much of the free-market canon, and in a way that the free-marketeers have generally not done and some of them refuse to do. They should read it.”--Bruce Ramsey, Liberty (Bruce Ramsey Liberty)
“Bill Lewis’s book aims to distill the lessons from a large body of original research on a question of enormous importance: what determines the performance, especially the productivity performance, of national economies and the industries within them? I was able to participate in much of the research, and I can report that I learned a lot about the sources of productivity in both the manufacturing and service sectors of modern economies. The obvious answers are only part of the story. Readers all around the world will see vital issues in a new light.”Robert M. Solow, winner of the 1987 Nobel Prize in Economics (Robert M. Solow, winner of the 1987 Nobel Prize in Economics)
“One of the central questions of economics concerns why some countries are rich, why other countries are poor, and how poor countries can best be helped to become rich. Among the many authors of books on this subject, Bill Lewis has the big advantage that the governments of many major countries asked him and his colleagues to investigate their economies and to advise them. His comparative perspective, consistent framework, and crystal-clear writing make this book a compelling read. It is also a delightful and surprising read: for instance, you probably never guessed why Japan produces automobiles much more efficiently than it produces milk.”Jared Diamond, Professor of Geography at UCLA and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning book Guns, Germs, and Steel (Jared Diamond, Professor of Geography at UCLA and author of the Pulitzer Prize-w)
“A “bottom up” analysis of productivity (as opposed to the usual macroeconomic approach) that is fascinating, diverse, and complex.”--Richard N. Cooper (Richard N. Cooper Foreign Affairs)

This is an updated version of the book that accurately predicted the global stock market crash of 2008, the bursting of the real estate bubble, and Ben Bernanke's unprecedented overreaction via 'Quantitative Easing' programs. First published in 2008, the book quickly became a bestseller not just for its timely insight into precious metals investment -- but for its amazingly accurate prediction of a 'Roller Coaster Crash' -- the manipulated whipsaw between inflation, deflation and back again. In this latest update to his book, author Michael Maloney adds his thoughts on what has played out so far, what we may be facing soon, and how gold and silver can help you transform the coming economic storm into a once in a lifetime opportunity.Gold & Silver have served as the ultimate safe-haven from financial chaos throughout history, and today is no exception. All the underlying fundamentals that caused the financial meltdown of 2008 have not been solved, but have been magnified by the actions of the world's central banks. The bailouts, currency creation, market manipulation, derivatives expansion, and growth of the "too big to fail" banks only guarantee that the next crisis will make the crash of 2008 look like a speed-bump on the way to the main event. Never in history has the global economy stood at such a precipice, and never in history has it been more vital to understand how, why and where to invest in gold and silver.
About the Author Michael Maloney is the precious metals investment advisor to Robert Kiyosaki, author of the most successful financial book in history, Rich Dad, Poor Dad. Their partnership began in 2005, and since then they have been educating the public on the merits of precious metals investing as a means to wealth generations.Since 2002, Mike has specialized in education on monetary history, economics, and financial literacy. He is widely regarded as an expert on economic cycles and has demonstrated to audiences throughout the United States that economic cycles are real, and that investing correctly for each phase of the economic cycle is a road to true wealth.Mike is the owner and founder of GoldSilver.com, an online precious metals dealership that specializes in delivery of gold and silver to a customer's doorstep, arranges for special secure storage, or for placement in one's IRA account. Additionally, GoldSilver.com provides invaluable research and commentary for its clients, assisting them in their wealth-building endeavors.
